The SHOCKING Six-Figures I Spent in Medical Care in 2022!

I spent A LOT in medical care in 2022. I have multiple chronic illnesses that require expensive medications and therapies. And don’t get me started on co-pay accumulators that rack up my costs even more… that’s another video. But tell me what you spent in medical care in a given year. I’m curious to know.

Watch the video to see how much I spent in 2022.

Below is a transcript if you prefer to read it:

00:00:00:00 – 00:00:02:08

So we all know why you clicked on the thumbnail.

00:00:02:08 – 00:00:05:26

It’s to see how much money I racked up in medical bills last year. And

00:00:05:26 – 00:00:07:21

it was in the six figures

00:00:07:21 – 00:00:09:26

To keep me alive and functional

00:00:09:26 – 00:00:16:27

Last year I racked up $292,000 in medical bills.

00:00:16:27 – 00:00:23:17

So I do have medical insurance. So let’s figure out how much I paid after that kicked in.

00:00:23:17 – 00:00:32:24

So I have a PPO plan that means that my insurance company contracts with a ton of different physicians, hospitals, imaging centers.

00:00:32:24 – 00:00:44:14

and if I use my insurances, in-network providers, I get a discount on the services that those providers give me via the contract that they have with my insurance company.

00:00:44:14 – 00:00:54:19

So let’s see, looking at my computer. So my plan last year, it had no deductible. I’m very honored to not have a deductible.

00:00:54:19 – 00:01:05:24

It had a 10% coinsurance on medical services until I met my out-of-pocket maximum of $4,500 dollars.

00:01:05:24 – 00:01:18:25

Prescription drug benefits are slightly different. They are four different tiers of medications, anywhere from 0 to $250 per medication per month is what I could potentially pay.

00:01:18:28 – 00:01:23:18

A lot of the specialty medications are at that $250 tier.

00:01:23:18 – 00:01:32:18

So this is really interesting, just for my specialty medication for my autoimmune arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, (blue

00:01:32:18 – 00:01:37:21

heart’s in the comments for all of my autoimmune arthritis buddies,)

00:01:38:10 – 00:01:45:02

So just for that medication alone, my insurance company paid the specialty pharmacy

00:01:45:02 – 00:01:49:14

$120,000.

00:01:49:14 – 00:01:53:19

gonna say that one more time. $120,000 for

00:01:53:19 – 00:01:54:12

one

00:01:54:12 – 00:01:58:23

medication that I take for my multiple chronic illnesses.

00:01:58:23 – 00:02:04:19

If I had absolutely no insurance, that would be $320

00:02:04:19 – 00:02:05:03

a

00:02:05:03 – 00:02:05:23

day

00:02:05:23 – 00:02:08:08

for one medication.

00:02:08:08 – 00:02:16:14

It’s really shocking to me that they can charge that much for that one medication, considering it’s a medication that’s been around for 20 years.

00:02:16:14 – 00:02:19:22

It’s unbelievable. It’s baffling.

00:02:19:22 – 00:02:22:05

That’s another video.

00:02:22:05 – 00:02:39:27

So I’m lucky to have health insurance. I used as many in-network contracted providers as I could last year. So for my premiums and any of my out-of-pockets for medical care for prescription drugs, I had to pay

00:02:39:27 – 00:02:43:29

$24,000 in

00:02:43:29 – 00:02:50:24

So it’s also important to note that that $24,000 does not include vision or dental.

00:02:50:24 – 00:02:56:23

to break down that $24,000, that means that every day last year

00:02:56:23 – 00:03:00:15

for my medications, doctor’s visits, anything related to my health,

00:03:00:15 – 00:03:02:22

I had to spend

00:03:02:22 – 00:03:05:11

$65 a day.

00:03:05:11 – 00:03:10:26

So that I could be a functioning member of society.

00:03:10:26 – 00:03:14:20

Go, America.

00:03:14:20 – 00:03:25:03

All right. So now I got a little tidbit of information for all you people in the United States so we can feel so much worse about our medical costs here.

00:03:25:03 – 00:03:33:18

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, National Health Expenditure Data,

00:03:33:18 – 00:03:47:25

in 2021, U.S. health care spending reached $4.3 trillion or $12,914 per person.

00:03:47:25 – 00:03:59:23

So, look, I understand that, like, not all of you are actually spending that amount of money on medical care. I mean, clearly, some of us are because. Hello, $24,000 here. Fun. And I have medical insurance.

00:03:59:26 – 00:04:01:16

I don’t have a high deductible plan.

00:04:01:16 – 00:04:03:14

Clearly, I have no deductible.

00:04:03:14 – 00:04:10:02

So I’m very lucky. But I want to put that in contrast to the European Union.

00:04:10:02 – 00:04:14:02

So the European Union, on average

00:04:14:02 – 00:04:15:23

in 2020,

00:04:15:23 – 00:04:16:21

spent

00:04:16:21 – 00:04:20:19

$3,050 per person.

00:04:20:19 – 00:04:25:11

And it’s it’s important to note that the EU has

00:04:25:18 – 00:04:28:00

double the population of the United States.

00:04:28:00 – 00:04:36:23

We definitely need to work on lowering our medical costs here in the United States, but that is like a whole other video.

00:04:36:23 – 00:04:45:27

So I thought it might be interesting for some of you to learn what I spent on medical care last year. Am I six months late?

00:04:45:27 – 00:04:46:27

Yes.

00:04:46:27 – 00:04:48:02

Does it matter?

00:04:48:02 – 00:04:50:19

No. You clicked on the video

00:04:50:19 – 00:04:53:10

because you were wondering how much money I spent.

00:04:53:10 – 00:04:56:17

And I spent a lot of money.

00:04:56:17 – 00:04:59:10
